Old World Signature Cross Pendant

The Old World Signature Cross Pendant is one of our best-kept secrets. Inspired by the elaborate designs on the interior of the Greek Orthodox Church, the founders of Old World decided to make this cross in several styles. Available in gold with diamonds, gold without diamonds, sterling silver large and sterling silver small, the cross is a favorite among the Christian community, largely due to it’s interesting “Annunciation” design.

This particular cross, which is repeated in almost every archway of the church, was chosen for specific reasons. Note that a Greek cross has arms of equal length. While the Latin cross is identified with the crucifixion, the Greek cross is considered a sign of God. Between each arm of the cross is the “fleur de lis,” or the flower of the lily. Not only do the three stems represent the Holy Trinity, but the lily itself represents the Virgin Mary, specifically the Annunciation, which is the name of the church. Thus, the “Annunciation Cross”.

The fleur de lis represented in religious art means several things. It is composed of sword shaped leaves and erect stalks bearing bright colored flowers composed of three petals and three drooping sepals. This stylized version of the lily was used in association with purity and in turn to the Virgin Mary. Since it is composed of three petals and three sepals it also represents the Trinity. In Christian art this symbol is also attributed to the Archangel Gabriel, notably in representations of the Annunciation.
